Previous Higher German also experienced two text for black: swartz for uninteresting black and blach for just a luminous black. They are parallelled in Middle English from the terms swart for dull black and blaek for luminous black. Swart nevertheless survives since the phrase swarthy, even though blaek grew to become the fashionable English black.
